The two numbers on the box
Every pressure washer is sold on PSI, because it is the bigger number and it sounds like power. The number beside it — gallons per minute — is printed smaller and is the one that decides how your day goes.
PSI is force per unit area at the surface. It breaks the bond between the dirt and the substrate. GPM is volume. It carries the loosened dirt away and keeps the working area rinsed. You need both, and almost everybody buys too much of the first and not enough of the second.
Why flow does the work

Multiply the two and you get cleaning units, which is the only honest single-number comparison between machines. A 3,000 PSI / 4 GPM machine is 12,000 cleaning units. A 4,000 PSI / 3 GPM machine is 12,000 too — on paper identical, in practice the first one finishes a driveway noticeably faster, because flow is what lets you run a surface cleaner and what rinses the slab as you go.
Flow is also a hard gate on equipment. A 20-inch surface cleaner needs about 4 GPM to keep its bar spinning properly. Below that the disc under-runs, the passes thin out, and the slab stripes as it dries. No amount of pressure fixes that.
How much is enough

Read that table twice and notice that the only row wanting more than 3,500 PSI is the one where you are covering ground for a living. For residential work, 3,000–3,500 PSI at 4 GPM does everything on this site and nothing on it needs more.
Surface damage risk
Distance is the third variable

Neither number on the box tells you what actually lands on the surface, because pressure falls away sharply with distance. The same machine, same tip, at four inches and at eighteen inches is two different tools — and stand-off is the control you use constantly and never think about.
This is why a surface cleaner produces such even results: the skirt fixes the stand-off, so every square inch gets the same treatment. A hand-held wand is only as consistent as your arm.

Buying advice that survives a season
- Buy the GPM, accept the PSI. Between two machines at a price, take the flow.
- Belt drive over direct drive if you are working every day. The pump runs cooler and slower and lasts far longer.
- Check the unloader and the pump brand, not the engine badge. The engine rarely fails first.
- Budget for a surface cleaner in the same purchase. A machine without one is not a flatwork business.
- Ignore “up to” pressure figures. They are the unloader’s bypass setting, not working pressure.
