Surface cleaner size calculator

A surface cleaner is the single biggest speed gain in flatwork, and the most common way to buy the wrong tool. The disc has to be matched to flow, not to pressure and not to ambition. Too big for the machine and the bar slows, the coverage thins, and the slab comes out striped.

Why flow, not pressure

The spinning bar is driven by the water leaving its two or four jets. Pressure decides how hard each jet hits; flow decides how much water there is to spread across the disc's circumference. A wide disc on a low-flow machine has the same water spread over a longer arc, so each square inch of concrete gets less of it and the bar turns more slowly — both of which show up as stripes.

The stripes appear a day later

A freshly cleaned slab looks even while it is wet. Uneven passes show up as the concrete dries, by which time you have left. Overlap a quarter of the disc on every pass and walk slower than feels necessary.
