Gas
The professional default, and the reason is flow rather than pressure. A surface cleaner needs roughly 4 GPM to keep its bar spinning properly, and a downstream injector needs enough volume to pull chemical reliably. Neither is available from a domestic outlet, because the motor that could deliver it would trip the breaker.
Gas also unties you from the building. On a commercial lot, a construction site or a house with no accessible outdoor outlet, a gas machine simply works. Belt drive over direct drive is worth the extra if you are running daily: the pump turns slower, runs cooler and lasts considerably longer.
Costs: it is loud, it needs fuel and oil, it wants winterising, and it cannot be run indoors or in a closed garage at all.
Surface damage risk
Electric
Genuinely good at what it is for. Quiet enough to use early on a Sunday, no fuel to store, no seasonal maintenance, light enough to carry one-handed. For patio furniture, bikes, cars, bins, a small deck or a courtyard, an electric machine is the right tool and a gas one is overkill.
The limitation is arithmetic, not quality. At roughly 1.4 GPM there is not enough water to drive a surface cleaner, not enough to pull chemical through an injector, and not enough to rinse a large area quickly. A driveway done with an electric machine and a wand is a long, striped afternoon.
Where it surprises people: it is perfectly capable on siding, because soft washing needs almost no pressure. Pair a small electric machine with a pump-up sprayer and you can wash a house properly.
Choosing
- Charging for the work? Gas, 3,000–3,500 PSI at 4 GPM, belt drive, with a 20-inch surface cleaner in the same purchase.
- Own house, occasional use, small hard surfaces? Electric. It will last longer because it sits unused.
- Own house with a large driveway? Gas, even as a homeowner. The alternative is a whole weekend.
- Noise-restricted site or indoor work? Electric is the only option, and plan the job round its flow.
