Pressure washing vs power washing: is there a difference?
Updated 2026-10-18
- Short answer
- Mostly the same job under two namesSome contractors keep “power washing” for heated water. The people who build the machines call both kinds pressure washers.
- Best for concrete
- Cold water and a surface cleaner3,000–3,500 PSI at 4 GPM through a 20 in disc. Heat earns its place only on oil and grease.
- Best for the house
- Neither — a soft washSiding and shingle roofs are cleaned with dilute hypochlorite at 100–500 PSI, whatever the company calls it.
The difference in one table
When the two words do mean different things, the line is heat. A pressure washer in that sense sprays water at whatever temperature it arrives; a power washer heats it first. Pressure, flow and nozzles are the same idea on both.
| Spec | Pressure washing | Power washing (heat sense) |
|---|---|---|
| Water temperature | As it comes from the tap | Heated by a burner or electric coil |
| What makers call the machine | Cold water pressure washer | Hot water pressure washer |
| Pressure range | Set by the pump, not the name | Set by the pump, not the name |
| Clearly better on | Nothing — matches heat on most home work | Grease, oil, fats, gum |
| Siding and shingle roofs | Soft wash instead | Soft wash instead — and never heat |
| Who mostly uses it | Homeowners, residential crews | Fleet, restaurant and industrial work |
The tinted column is our pick because it is the right machine for most homes. That is a statement about what most people need cleaned, not about what heat can do.
What pressure washing is
Pressure washing is cleaning a surface with water forced through a small nozzle by a pump. An engine or electric motor drives the pump; the pump pushes water down a high-pressure hose to a trigger gun; the nozzle on the end shapes the stream from a pencil jet to a wide fan. That is the whole machine, and every word in this argument describes some version of it.
Two numbers describe what it can do. PSI is the force that breaks dirt loose; GPM is the flow that carries it away. Multiply them for cleaning units: a 3000 PSI / 4 GPM machine is 12,000 CU. Our PSI guide explains why the flow figure matters more than the pressure, and the surface PSI chart lists the safe setting for 18 surfaces.

Who says power washing means heat
Read a dozen contractor websites and most will tell you the difference is heat: power washing uses hot water, pressure washing uses cold. That usage is real. It is just not a standard, and the companies that build hot-water machines do not follow it.
| Who | What they are | What they call it |
|---|---|---|
| Hotsy | Commercial machine maker | “Hot Water Pressure Washers” |
| Landa | Commercial machine maker | “Hot Water Gas & Diesel Pressure Washers” |
| Kärcher | Machine maker | “Hot water high-pressure cleaners” |
| Alkota | Hot-water machine maker | “Hot water pressure washers”, and says the words differ mostly by preference and region |
| PWNA | Trade association, named Power Washers of North America | Calls its own trade “the pressure washing industry” |
| ARMA | Roofing manufacturers’ association | Warns against “a power washer”, meaning any high-pressure system |
| Many contractor sites | Service marketing | “Power washing” means heated water |
Read from each organisation’s own site on 2026-10-18. Catalogue names quoted as printed.
So the equipment side says “hot water pressure washer” for the heated machine. The trade association with “power washers” in its name, a non-profit founded in 1992, describes its members’ work as pressure washing. And the heat rule lives mostly in service marketing, where “power washing” is also simply the phrase many homeowners type.
In practice that means a company advertising power washing may never heat a drop of water, and a homeowner asking for power washing usually means “please clean this.” Neither is wrong. The word just does not carry the information you need.

What to ask for instead
Drop the label and ask for four things. Any operator who knows the work will answer them without hesitating, and the answers tell you more than either word ever could.
- Water temperature. Hot or cold, and why on this job.
- Pressure. The PSI used on each surface, not the machine’s top rating.
- Flow. GPM, which decides speed and what surface cleaner the rig can drive.
- Method. Pressure or a soft wash with chemistry. For walls and roofs this matters most.
| Job | What to ask for | Heat needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete driveway | 3,000–3,500 PSI, 20 in surface cleaner at about 4 GPM, 25° green to edge | Only for oil spots |
| Oil-stained garage floor | Alkaline degreaser with a long dwell, 15° yellow then 25° green | Yes, if the oil is old |
| Dumpster pad, fleet, drive-through | Degreaser, 3,500–4,000 PSI at 5.5–8 GPM, recurring schedule | Yes — this is where it pays |
| Vinyl siding | Soft wash at 100–500 PSI, 0.5–1.5% SH plus surfactant | No |
| Asphalt shingle roof | Soft wash only, ~3% SH, 15–20 min dwell, gentle rinse | Never |
| Cedar or softwood deck | 500–1,200 PSI, 40° white, percarbonate cleaner | No |
Dot colours are the nozzle code: green 25°, yellow 15°, white 40°, black for the soap tip on a soft wash.
Only two rows want heat, and both are petroleum or food fat. Our guide to removing oil stains from concrete shows where a hot pass changes the result. For what a heated machine costs to run and own, read hot water vs cold water pressure washers; this page will not repeat it.
The walls and roof rows are not a pressure job at all. If a quote says power washing and the job is your siding, ask whether they mean a soft wash. Our soft wash vs pressure wash comparison covers which surface gets which.
If you are hiring, or buying
Hiring. Price follows area, surface and soiling, not the name on the van. Homewyse puts basic pressure washing at $0.42–$0.52 per square foot and notes that a 2-hour minimum labour charge is standard. Run your own numbers through the pressure washing cost calculator. A hot-water job needs a heavier machine and burner fuel, so if one is quoted, ask for the heat to be shown as its own line. Weighing a hire against doing it yourself? See DIY vs professional pressure washing.
Buying. For a home, the machine you want is a cold-water pressure washer, whatever the box calls it. Read the PSI and GPM on the plate, then choose between sizes with 2000 vs 3000 PSI. A heated unit only makes sense once you have signed recurring grease work.
Checklist before you say yes
- Will you use hot or cold water here, and why?
- What pressure on each surface, and with which tip?
- Will the walls and roof be soft washed rather than pressure washed?
- What GPM is the rig, and what surface cleaner does it run on the drive?
- Where does the wash water go? Rules differ by city and state, so check your local water authority.
Common questions
Is power washing stronger than pressure washing?
No. Strength is the pump: PSI times GPM. Heat dissolves grease and oil faster, but it adds no pressure. A cold machine and a hot machine with the same pump push water just as hard.
Is a power washer the same as a pressure washer?
Mostly, yes. Some contractors keep “power washer” for heated machines; the makers of those machines sell them as hot water pressure washers. Ask whether it heats the water and you have your answer.
Should I power wash my house?
Not with pressure. Vinyl siding and painted wood are soft washed: dilute hypochlorite at 100–500 PSI, a dwell, then a gentle rinse. Pressure drives water behind the siding.
Does hot water kill mould and algae better?
Barely. The green and black growth on a house is biological, and the chemistry kills it whether the water is hot or not. Heat earns its keep on grease, not on algae.
What is jet washing?
The same machine under another name. Pressure washer, power washer, jet washer and high-pressure cleaner all describe a pump forcing water through a nozzle.
